Bob Zawalich, the Santa Claus of Sibelius plug-ins, has dropped something in our stockings just in time for Christmas — and it’s not a lump of coal. His new plug-in, simply called Page Numbers, adds to Sibelius the ability to instantly hide or show all the page numbers in the score, parts, or both — something that previously had to be done one page number region at a time and one part at a time. It also can delete all the page number changes that have been manually placed in the score and/or parts, or simply trace them (in other words, let you know where they exist) without actually removing them.

For a thorough explanation about the intricacies of page numbers, read “Working with page numbers in Sibelius”, posted on this blog two months ago. Since that time, Bob has been hard at work on his plug-in, and has put in many long hours working through various test cases. About the plug-in, Bob says:

It processes the entire score or parts, disregarding any selection.

Except when tracing, the plug-in adds a page number change before the first bar. In some cases you may not want this, and you should select and delete the first page number.

Display results will trace changes to existing page number change objects.

The primary use of this plugin will probably be to hide page numbers. Note that it can hide them both in the full score and in the parts.

If you hide page numbers in parts manually, and then later add new instruments, the corresponding parts will not have hidden page numbers. With this plug-in you can at any time set all the parts to have hidden page numbers.

The plug-in can also trace existing page number changes so you can find where they are and what their settings are. It can change hidden page numbers to show the numbers, and it can delete existing page number changes.

The plug-in is only available in Sibelius 7.1.3 or later, because that was the first version where it was possible for a plug-in to add a page number change before the first bar in the score, which is essential for hiding or showing page numbers.

I note that when tracing you will see “Undetermined” as the page number change format at the start of the score. This is because there is no way to examine the initial page number state without adding a page number change, and doing that can change the page number settings. So it is sort of a Schrödinger’s cat situation, and I did the best I could.

Bob’s best is plenty good enough for us. And, I hear from one of his elves that if we’re really nice and not very naughty, we might see another present under the tree soon.

Page Numbers may be downloaded directly through Sibelius 7 at File > Plug-ins > Install Plug-ins > Engravers’ Tools. Users may also install it manually in Sibelius 7 by visiting the plug-in download page and following the usual manual installation procedure.
