It’s The Little Things: View > Handles

I hope you’ll excuse the whimsical illustration. Today’s little thing is View > Handles, a small but useful improvement that makes certain operations much easier than before.

Many objects in Sibelius have handles, small square boxes that appear when the object is selected, normally to show you that the object has multiple parts that can be edited individually. For example, notes show handles on the ends of their stems, so that you can drag them or move them with the arrow keys to change the stem length of notes; hairpins have handles at the left- and right-hand ends to show you that you can change their length by selecting one of the handles and extending or retracting them with Space or Shift-Space. Likewise, the new and improved slurs in Sibelius 6 show no fewer than six handles.

Some handles are a little less obvious. For example, to indent a staff from the right-hand side, you have to click about one space to the right of the middle staff line in the right-hand page margin. Look for the little purple box in the picture below:

Once you know where it is, it’s reasonably easy to click in the right spot to select that handle, but it can certainly take more than one attempt.

When you switch on View > Handles, this and all other handles will be visible in the score all the time in light grey. This makes it much, much easier to find this and other obscure handles.
