In the words of country singer Sonny James, “It’s the little things that make me love you.” And there are lots and lots of little improvements in Sibelius 6 that are easy to miss, so I want to draw your attention to a few of them here.
We’ll start with the humble mouse wheel, the utility of which has seen a number of improvements in Sibelius 6. First off, zooming:
- You can now zoom by holding Command on Mac and scrolling the mouse wheel, just as you have been able to do (when holding Ctrl) on Windows since Sibelius 3.
- The direction of zoom has been reversed, so that pushing the mouse wheel forwards zooms in, and pulling it towards you zooms out; this is more in line with other applications.
- The rate of zoom has been smoothed to smaller increments, so that you’re less likely to get disorientated as you zoom in and out.
We’ve also improved the use of the mouse wheel in many dialogs throughout Sibelius on Mac; in fact, only one dialog remains resistant to the cheeky cheese-munching chappies, and that’s the Symbol dialog (used by both Create > Symbol and House Style > Edit Symbol). It proved too difficult to get the mouse wheel working in this dialog (which uses a custom grid display control of our own concoction), so we had to settle for adding extra keyboard navigation in this dialog: you can use Home, End, Page Up and Page Down to navigate around the dialog, as well as the arrow keys to move one symbol at a time.
What’s your favourite small improvement to Sibelius 6? I’ll be sharing some more of mine in the coming days.

Nice graphic.
Small improvements? They’re all so big! But there is one, for me: using the arrow keys in dialogs.
No mousewheel on my new laptop, alas! But Sibelius 6 looks great in the super detailed graphic resolution.
