Sibelius has always provided excellent support for guitar notations, and Sibelius 6 has some particularly fine improvements for guitar enthusiasts. Not only has the chord symbols feature been completely overhauled, and not only has a whole new feature for creating guitar scale diagrams been added, but we’ve also added a little thing that can make a big difference, if you’ll pardon the pun.

In previous versions of Sibelius, if you wanted to change the size of a guitar chord diagram, you had two choices: either make everything proportionally bigger by increasing the staff size in Layout > Document Setup, or go to the Guitar page of House Style > Engraving Rules and laboriously work out how thick the nut line should be, what the diameter of the X and O symbols should be, and so on.

Sibelius 6 provides two new tools that make changing the size of chord diagrams (and the new scale diagrams) easy as pie: a default size slider on the Guitar page of Engraving Rules makes it much quicker to change the size of all chord and scale diagrams in your score; and a new Scale control on the General panel of Properties allows you to change the size of one or more selected chord or scale diagrams.

So don’t fret — it’s easy to change the size of chord diagrams in Sibelius 6. (I think I can hear the pun police coming…)

This is going to save alot of time for publishers as it’s no fun trying to create lots of guitar chord boxes manually slightly larger! Again another feature making the world’s best notation software even better! Thank you Sibelius developers!

All great news for us guitarists!

But when are Sibelius going to fix the problem that occurs when you notate a slide from a grace note to a full sized note

(Try it and see)

I have been asking this since Sibelius 4

That’s a good and fair question, John! I know that this is a problem that has been on our backlog for a while. Unfortunately it’s really difficult to fix and will require us to re-implement slides in a new way to sort it out, but it is definitely on our list of things to address in a future version. I’m sorry I can’t give you a more definitive answer right now.
