This is, I believe, a first. Nestling among the musical paraphernalia on the front cover of Pat Metheny’s new album Orchestrion is an unusual artefact, at once both at home there and also strangely out of place.

Can you spot it? All is revealed after the jump.

Take a look at the bottom right-hand corner of the image. Here’s that part of the image enlarged.

Yes, that is a Sibelius 6 box sitting on the floor! To my knowledge this is the first time Sibelius has been featured on the sleeve art for a major new album.

Orchestrion will be released in early 2010 on Nonesuch, and Pat and his band will be touring the album starting in Europe in February, and moving to the United States and Canada in May. Check out the tour dates!

That’s pretty darn cool.

Looks like a nice picture for a “Where’s Sibelius?” scavenger hunt. Congrats on the exposure!

Cool – I bet Marc (Schonbrun) has something to do with this (not so much with Sib 6 being in the picture as Pat Metheney using it).

And Pat and his band will be touring the album starting in Europe in February..

No — only Pat! He plays all those instruments by himself! Probably with a software that is controlled by Pat through the guitar and the keyboards…
